Decide on one thing you'll implement to become more natural. Even if it's just diffusing an oil instead of spraying store bought air fresheners.
When I first decided that I was going to start my natural journey, one of the most popular natural ingredients I continued to see over and over again was these little glass bottles. So I wanted to learn what the big deal was. Questions like, how to use them? The benefits? Did they fit my budget? I needed to know the secrets. In addition to that, I discovered a huge variety of products I could actually make myself simply with essential oils, water, and other random things I already had in my home.
Are Essential Oils Natural?
So one of the most obvious questions that I wanted to be answered was "are essential oils natural?" and the answer was, "YES, ABSOLUTELY!" If they weren't it would be no purpose for this article lol.
From my understanding, they are usually extracted from roots, seeds, stems, flowers, leaves, or the zest of the fruit, so yes they are definitely natural. However, be careful sometimes companies will add other ingredients and unnecessary oils to the essential oil bottle, which can compromise the quality of the oil.
What Are Essential Oils?
So in case you're new here, essential oils are a concentrated volatile liquid that is extracted from particular plants, flowers, herbs, seeds, or fruit. I put together a guide from A to Z, of essential oils. I share what they smell like, and a few of their benefits. It is published on Amazon, you can check it out here. It's called "Help Me Learn About Essential Oils"!
How Are Essential Oils Made?
These powerful oils are so potent yet the process is extremely delicate, I was amazed. There were so many videos online when I was searching youtube for the process.
For instance, they had two different ways of extracting oils, one way was cold-press. I mainly saw this one with the fruits and it was done by regular people like you and me. For example, they grate the peel of an orange and add it to some coconut oil, then they will squeeze the oils out and make orange oil.
Now I'm sure the process is a little more delicate with companies such as plant therapy, but it was still interesting to see the gist of it. The next method I found, was called steamed distillation which is basically pressure and steam. They would use these steps to extract the oils from plants, flowers, etc.
What are Essential Oils Used For?
Most importantly, my going natural journey taught me that there's oils for almost everything. Essential oils are used for their medicinal benefits, as well as their amazing natural wide range of scents, and cleaning power. They are also used for aromatherapy, I don't know about you but I have days where I can use a little scent boost to get my mood back on track.
How to Use Essential Oils?
Add a natural scent to your home, for its healing properties, or you can diffuse them. Because from my experience the aroma really can be a natural mood booster. You can use them in your beauty products, cleaning solutions, as a body spray and perfume alternative, a pain relief, or to soothe a rash you may have. Essential oils are so versatile, I love having them in different parts of the home for a gazillion different reasons.
Do Essential Oils Work?
Have you ever heard the saying "the mind is a powerful thing"? Well, some have said essential oils don't work, it's all in our heads, and others have said they have had life-changing results. For me, I've had both. It's been times when I've tried an oil recipe and it did nothing for me, but other times I have seen amazing results.
For instance, every single time I have gotten sick before I knew about oils, I would have to take off work and be uncomfortable for a few days. But since learning about oils, I have a recipe that I created that has stopped every sore throat or cough in its tracks. Even when I had congestion and upper respiratory issues. But I'm no doctor or professional, that's just my story.
So, here’s the honest truth, do essential oils work? Maybe. But unfortunately, It hasn’t been enough studies on it to actually prove that they heal. So for me, I did research and I decided to try them out for myself.
Side Effects of Essential Oils
Even though essential oils are natural, they are not for everyone. When it comes to us natural newbies, sometimes we can use too much, or not properly dilute it, or our bodies are rejecting it.
Some signs to look out for are coughing, eye irritation, skin irritation, or burning sensations. The story I use a lot for this is when I put way too much peppermint oil in a toilet bowl. I was following a recipe and the number of drops I added had my eyes runny, I was coughing, it was too much. Another example is when I was diffusing tea tree oil and the children started coughing. I realized it's important to listen to your body and look out for these side effects even when trying a natural oil.
Are Essential Oils Safe?
One thing that I learned very early on when it came to essential oils is that natural didn’t always mean safe. Just like anything else you must do your own research, try small areas first, ask your doctor, and pay attention to your body.
For instance, tea tree oil is a strong oil and is known to sometimes be toxic to children and pets. Another example, is when I used oregano oil on my skin to stop a sore throat and didn’t dilute it, omg it was burning so bad I really thought the pain would never end.
So remember oils are safe when properly diluted and used correctly.
Where to Buy Essential Oils?
At this point, you can buy essential oils anywhere. Dollar tree, grocery stores, with a network marketing company, or even online. Now, are they all created equal? Absolutely not.
I’ve tried multiple companies some were def better than others. It depends on what you’re looking for, convenience? Price? Quality? Right now two of my favorite brands to order essential oils from are Melaleuca and Plant Therapy.

What Is The Difference Between Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils?
In conclusion, essential oils are extracted from plants and fragrance oils are a mixture of different ingredients some we don't know, some we can't even pronounce, some that haven't even been tested. In short, fragrance oils are usually made with synthetic chemicals and have no healing benefits.
